Parametric Design and Terminal Renovation at Imam Khomeini International Airport
North Building of Entrance Level +8.00 | Bus Lounge | South Entrance View
Parametric design is a contemporary architectural approach that uses algorithms and geometric patterns to craft intricate, innovative forms. By defining specific rules within a digital design environment, designers can generate visually appealing, highly functional structures. Repetitive patterns, often inspired by Islamic architecture’s historical use of geometry in domes, arches, and windows, are reimagined through algorithmic thinking to serve both aesthetic and structural purposes.
With the help of advanced software, this methodology allows for the translation of geometry into unique patterns across surfaces, volumes, and objects. These geometric strategies not only enrich visual storytelling but also enhance the integrity and performance of architectural designs — as seen in the terminal's sleek, future-forward spaces.
Terminal 1 Renovation and Reorganization
A New Vision for Passenger Experience
The growing demands of international and domestic air travel have accelerated the need for rethinking Terminal 1 at Imam Khomeini International Airport. In response, a comprehensive renovation and interior reorganization plan has been initiated — focused on expanding passenger capacity and enhancing traveler experience.
Key upgrades include:
Functional improvements to streamline passenger flow
Environmental enhancements for psychological comfort and aesthetic quality
Research-driven updates based on international case studies and expert consultation
This reimagined terminal prioritizes both operational efficiency and emotional well-being, turning the airport into a more welcoming, human-centered space for travelers and their companions.
Concept: The Sleeping Simorgh
Symbolism and Spatial Connection
Given the extended southern façade, the opportunity arises to transform this area into a lush, welcoming garden — creating a strong connection between the main building and its southern counterpart. Inspired by Persian mythology, the design introduces the concept of the Sleeping Simorgh, a powerful symbol of wisdom, flight, and rebirth.
While one side of the façade depicts the Simorgh at rest, the other showcases it in flight — reflecting motion and spirit. The path leading to the passenger exit is conceptualized as the Seven Valleys of Love, inspired by Attar's mystical work, guiding passengers through a metaphorical journey that elevates their experience from arrival to departure.
